One of the UK’s largest dental chains, mydentist, has confirmed a new charity partnership with Dementia UK.

Dementia is one of the leading causes of death in the UK and it can have a devastating effect on all aspects of health and wellbeing, including dental health. People with dementia may struggle with everyday tasks, such as cleaning the teeth and they may be more reluctant to raise concerns or seek help if they have symptoms linked to decay, infection or gum disease.

Mydentist is hoping to work with Dementia UK to improve services for dementia patients and raise awareness of the effects of dementia. Director of clinical services, Paul Edwards, said that everyone at Dementia UK is “delighted” about the new partnership with mydentist. People who have dementia are more susceptible to dental issues and problems have been exacerbated by the pandemic, with many patients unable to access appointments.

The partnership will enable teams from Dementia UK to work with dental professionals from mydentist to support “vital work” with patients with dementia, Mr Edwards explained. The company’s fundraising efforts will also allow more people who need specialist support to access dementia care.

Mydentist selected Dementia UK as its official charity partner after asking staff members to vote for causes to support. There were six options to choose from and Dementia UK received over a third of the votes.
